Derek Smart draws abuse to himself because of his megalomania, his quick flamer trigger, his penchant to lie, and his hyper-sensitivity to perceived criticism. This doesn't happen in only one or two places. Derek draws abuse to himself like flies to stink wherever he goes. The results are usually quite comical. This one even generates some audio visual comic relief. Here's a little interchange that started on EvilAvatar, HomeWorld2 is Canceled Thread, and went to email. DrCrypt gave me permission to publish his email. (It actually is a very funny thread. You may want to just read the whole thing yourself.) I want to make it clear that I had absolutely no contact with DrCrypt until after this thread had occurred. Contrary to Mr. Smart's weird ideas, I do NOT recruit detractors. I never have and never will. I consider the recruitment of new detractors to be Mr. Smart's job and only Mr. Smart's job. However, once they're recruited then I tell them absolutely everything they are to say and do in the Flame War Follies. :-)

You should take your own advice, chestnut.

And just so you know, a publisher cancelling a project, doesn't usually spell the end of the developer, unless said publisher either (a) owns said developer (b) is the primary source of income for said developer.

Even if Sierra cancelled HW2 - its their FUCKING PROPERTY and can do WTF they please with it!! If Relic hasn't taken into account the ever changing industry climate, and have contingency plans (e.g the ass-looking Sigma), then they don't deserve to be in business, let alone compete for shelf-space or gamer dollars. Its business. Its harsh. Its real. And nobody has to fucking like it.

If you fuckheads felt so bad about it, you should've bought TWO COPIES of HW (which I thought was a good game, btw).

CLEARLY, even if Evil's sales figures are accurate (since he quotes PC Data figures, and would get his ass sued if they are incorrect), then obviously Sierra spent a lot more on the development and marketing of HW, than those sales were able to recoup. Yes, this very notion would be strange to some of you ladies, because, while you try to act elitist online (while making righteous fools of yourselves), you don't have a FUCKING CLUE how the industry works or WHAT it costs to develop and market a game. Sierra spent A FUCKING FORTUNE on HW and am not in the LEAST surprised that IF in fact, HW2 has been canned, it would be due to the fact that both HW and its add-on, didn't sell enough for Sierra to recoup their dev+marketing expenses, in order to even think of continuing with HW2 - WHICH, it so happens, has been in development since early 2000 and its now LATE 2001 and its still not on the horizon.

Now, I know this is hard, but replace that chestnut with a hazelnut and it will be clear that by the time HW2 is FINISHED and MARKETED, it would have cost Sierra MORE dollars. And IF they did cancel it, it could probably be because of (a) said reasons already indicated above (b) relationship with Relic (c) POSSIBLY the fact that Relic is probably focusing on Sigma for a COMPETING publisher, and Sierra problem attributes that to either the delay of HW2 and/or the quality?

Jesus fucking Christ, how many retarded people does it take to twist such a simple premise of a publisher canning a product?

WHY would it be strange for Sierra, notorious for milking a franchise, no matter how dead (CIP: Half Life), to continue milking a franchise (HW) if it was a money maker for them?

Those first two lines tell me that you don't have the wherewithall, not the mental capacity to engage me in a flamewar. So, you resort to tired old material, drummed up by the same idiots who declared open season on me and painted a glow-in-the-dark bullseye on my ass.

It also shows that you are 1 of a small group of people, who don't already realize that, not only is that whole racist email business a blatant fabrication with absolutely ZERO facts and evidence about me forging it, but it also shows that you have NO material with with to engage me.

And to prove that you're just regurgitating rubbish fed to you by some jackass (who looked just like you), IF you were even part of the Usenet discussion when that occured, you would KNOW that that Trainman DID admit to sending me a threat via email, but DENIED the racist line. Of course, he was on the side of the detractors, not only did he DISAPPEAR since that day, UNABLE to provide *his* ORIGINAL of the email which would have proved beyond a reasonable doubt (you DO know what that is, right? Maybe not), his friends, the detractors, decided to twist it around, and take HIS word for it. Forgeting the fact that he DID in fact, communicate a threat to me, which I then reported to the local police AND the FBI. Hence his DISAPPEARANCE. The whole premise about me forging the email was to alleviate the fact that he DID communicate a threat to me AND my family. His friends felt that by TRYING to say that HE was right and I am wrong (in that, he didn't write the racist part), that the entire email could be called to question and he could ALSO deny ever communicating the thread. It backfired because not only (a) could it NOT be proven that I doctored the email (b) he could NOT deny ever sending me the email. And even if the racist portion were thrown own, there WAS a clear and present threat communicated - something he can't wiggle away from since he would have NO other reason to send ME email.

And for as many times as I've shut down Bill Huffman's site, that racist email he claims that I have forged, is going to be the ONE bane that causes his sites to be shutdown for good (he keeps moving it each time I have them shutdown) once I *really* take court action. Something I can't do at the moment, due to the time, effort and costs involved (I'm in Florida. He's in California) seeing that I'm working on shipping my game.

Derek, are you accusing me of phone harassment? Previously in this thread (and many others), I've referenced being from the Boston area. In this thread alone I've given my exact address.

The problem with your acquisition is that the two different area codes you have listed are from Florida (your home state) and New York, respectively. Florida is over a thousand miles away, New York about three hundred. Are you suggesting I drove down to New York, made a call from a pay phone to you, then quickly flew down to Florida to do the same thing?

I know you are insane, but why you thought this would even be remotely convincing is beyond me.

Update: Furthermore, if you call the two numbers Derek lists, they both lead to "The number you have dialed can not be reached. Please hang up and dial the number again." messages. Which means they are made-up telephone numbers. Way to post an easily disproven lie, Derek.

But let's for a second pretend this is true, and that he somehow made two telephone calls to you from completely different states. How is it that now both telephone numbers are out of service? Did someone set up two telephone lines in different states just to harass you, then within a span of mere hours manage to cancel them? Don't even you find this a bit hard to believe?

Given this information, the only thing I can conclude is that you suffer from delusional paranoia or are just an irreprobate liar. The sympathetic side of me wants to believe the former, but I'm going to assume that you are, in fact, the latter.

Listen, you don't like me and I certainly don't like you. That's fine. I got the area code incorrect. They are both 561. Also, it probably never
occured to you that it IS possible to make calls using the Internet, temporary
phones etc. Also, the person (even IF it was you), can easily disconnect the

And you don't have to fucking believe me, - I DON'T CARE.
All I know is, yesterday was the 08-21-01 and all I have to do is ask my telco
for a call log to my business line for that day, and ALL calls made can be sent
to me. So, the nonsense you posted, is just that, nonsense. Whether the number
was disconnected or not, the telco will know who had it, how it was made etc.
Once the person called the second time, and advised them that I was going to
record the conversation (as I am legally allowed to do), they stopped talking.
I never did record the first call, because it took me by surprise. And the reason
I edited the post a SECOND time (if you noticed), was to insert the SECOND phone
number. The person called a SECOND time after I hung up the first time.

If you WANTED to do meaningful sleuthing, you would find out what CNM Networks
is. Because thats the identifier that showed up on my call trace (its still there)
along with the numbers. In fact, I just checked it again, the FIRST call did NOT
have an area code (246-5266). And the only time the call identifier (I use a
Sony system) will NOT display an area code, is if the incoming number is a local
call. My local area code is 954.

Now, fool, tell me this, HOW is it possible for someone to call me from
these TWO numbers, both identified from the SAME network (CNM Networks) if its
not some sort of roaming, temporary phone card etc, huh? You think I'm stupid,
don't you?

Now please get the fuck out of my inbox and do NOT send me any more emails. Keep
your shit to the EA forums. Since I have NO interest in conversing with you, you'll
be playing all by yourself.

I hope this is clear.

And for the benefit of the innocent bystanders. I took webcam snaps of the calls (in fact, there were three, not two as I had thought. I must not have picked up the phone the third time) as they appear in my office handheld display. You can see the date/time, ID info etc. Now, compare those date/times to the postings of DrCrypt, and you will see why I found it odd that those just happened, all of a sudden.

The call0X.jpg files were noticed by people over in the comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.space-sim forum but we had no clue what they were about. It was actually very funny. There were also some funny posts made in the news group based on the fact that in the picture above, Derek is apparently wearing a shirt that says "Bugg Boy" on it. Also as you would expect to usually find Mr. Smart, he is scowling at the world.

Finally, after I made a plea on comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.space-sim for copies of the call0X.jpg files so I could prepare this page, Derek Smart made a plea for sympathy and claimed that the Flame War Follies site is filled with lies and there was a conspiracy and that DrCrypt was under my control or something. So, I made my first post to EvilAvatar in over a year.

DrCrypt and I have never meet nor communicated prior to just a couple days ago. Mr. Smart, YOU recruited DrCrypt as a detractor, not I. Stop being such a paranoid chucklehead. Also it is you that is into this Flame War Follies thing full time. For me it's just a silly part time hobby.

I'm EXTREMELY careful to only post the truth on my website (or perhaps I should say your website). I've offered many times for you to write a rebuttal to anything on there that you would like to. I will put it up on the website without any editing.

For example, you forged racist email and I wrote a page presenting what I believe is proof beyond a reasonable doubt to your guilt of this most heinous of netiquette violations. I invite you again to rebut the proof. I will publish it on the site with no editing and give it a prominent position and links. You keep saying you didn't forge the racist email and that you're going to sue me for saying such a thing but the statute of limitation has come and gone. How long do you think people are going to believe that same old worn out story that you're going to sue? I speak the plain old truth and you can't sue or at least wouldn't have a prayer to ever win a suit. Just like when I pointed out that you are a PhD fraud, you made the same impotent threats (and still do).

I tell you what Mr. Smart, before I publish this latest story about crank calls to a cranky kook, I'll let you read it first and add or create your own rebuttal to it.

My basic idea for publishing this is that I want to demonstrate that it is not me or DrCyrpt or any of the other detractors that have painted this glow-in-the-dark bullseye on your rearend. It is simply you. Perhaps you should check your own chair for wet paint rather than blaming others?

Also, please stop lying about taking down the Flame War Follies site. You have NEVER taken down that site. The only site you ever successfully got taken down was the freebie angelfire site. http://home.san.rr.com/follies is still up to counter this lie you keep repeating.

Here's the fitting epilog. Notice in the pictures that were posted by Derek that allegedly show the caller-id numbers, one picture has the area code and the other two don't show the area code. I did some research and after talking to about a dozen people everyone said (including someone that was a testing engineer for a phone company) that the area code is always displayed for caller-id calls. Even if you can imagine that Derek's phone is different, why is the area code sometimes there and other times not there? I believe that the most reasonable conclusion is that Derek fabricated the evidence. Lending more evidence to the theory of fabricated evidence is the fact that on one of the pictures that doesn't show an area code, Derek claims to know what the area code was and he even changed his own story on what the area code was.
