It is apathetic attitudes that are a big part of the problem in many areas. For example, at one point in time people were apathetic about littering. It was disgusting to drive down a country road. People started caring, the apathy towards litter went away and litter is not the huge problem that it was years a go. There's a problem with honesty and accepting responsibility. People like you say, "Why should I care? It is just a "little" lie about claiming a PhD that I never earned." Claiming unearned credentials is becoming an epidemic. Dr. John Bear said that he knows of over 30 new diploma mills opening for business just this year! It is dishonest uninformed people like Derek that keep these con-artists in business. Dr. Bear likened the con-artists to drug pushers. Derek is addicted to his fraud and lies. It is apathetic attitudes like yours that only encourages it. It isn't about ego. It definitely isn't about hating Derek. I've never met him. It's about respecting truth and honesty. I consider PhD's a very big deal. To me it represents years of hard work and making a new contribution to mankind's store of knowledge in the academic environment. It demeans the whole educational system and shows a disrespect for knowledge to claim a PhD that hasn't been earned. It's also about fun. It's hilarious to watch the fraud and forger trying to squirm his way out of all the predicaments he keeps getting himself into, especially when the truth would be such a simple solution for him. It's like a combination of a soap opera and an "I Love Lucy" show where Lucy has told a lie and it leads to bigger and more hilarious lies.
