Can you handle it? In a recent interview of Derek Smart there were a number of false statements by Mr. Smart that I would like the opportunity to correct. The false statements that cause me the most concern involve Mr. Smart's claim to a PhD and the history of that claim. You may reference Mr. Smart's statements by going to the Derek Smart interview on http://www.gamersvoice.com and going to the third page of his interview. Mr. Smart originally lied that he had a degree from a fully accredited institution. For example in a post dated Sep. 28, 1997 he said "My PH.D. is in Computer Science from a renowed accredited college." An invalid PhD is not the same thing as an honorary degree. An honorary PhD is not fraud as long as the person doesn't falsely represent himself. The difference is that Mr. Smart was falsely claiming he had earned a bona fide PhD from an accredited school. A number of claims regarding the PhD by Mr. Smart were inconsistent with real PhD programs and also where modified when he was caught in lies. Bear came on the news group and said that he had never heard of anyone being able to completely suppress the record of their dissertation like Mr. Smart claimed that he had done. Bear is recognized as a world leading authority on distant learning. He is the author of the premier book on distant learning. On September 10, 1999, Mr. Smart admitted that he got his diploma from a degree mill that was listed in Dr. Bear's book. This was forced because Mr. Smart had confessed this fraud in an email that the recipient decided to publish. Mr. Smart falsely states that degree mills are anyone offering distant learning opportunities when they are not accredited. This also is a lie and blatantly false. In Dr. Bear's book there's listed 1. Over 1000 Accredited schools offering degrees via Distant Learning 2. Over 200 Unaccredited schools offering degrees via Distant Learning Dr. Bear provides addresses and a description for each of the schools above. The above 1200 schools are described in 200 pages. The purpose is to help people looking for a distant learning program. Dr. Bear then spends 24 pages warning people to stay away from fake schools in his chapter on degree mills. Derek has admitted the source of his diploma is listed in this chapter. Dr. Bear does not provide addresses but lists over 400 degree mills by name in his chapter on degree mills. Dr. Bear says that diplomas from the degree mills are worthless. Degree mills are not schools, they are frauds. Dr. Bear likens the people running degree mills to drug dealers. I have never been kicked off of any server as Mr. Smart claims. I'm still even using the free web service from angelfire. I still occasionally post to Usenet from work but, I was asked by my employer to no longer post to the flame war from work. This was after Derek Smart and one of his "supporters" tried to get me fired. It is also true that over a year a go Mr. Smart hired a lawyer to try to squelch free speech by scaring off people that dared to tell the truth about him.
