Putting Bill Huffman's argument that Derek does not have a Ph.D. aside for the moment, I would like to look at some other aspects. First of all, I have never know any Ph.d's to act like Derek, and I have known many. I know there are exceptions to anything but most of them (in the science and math field) are eccentric at worst. Everyone is proud of their degree and will readily tell you ALL of the details. They are proud of the school where they got their degree. In defending your thesis, you field many questions from your committee, faculty and student body. Your committee tries to find problems in your logic, data or scientific methods. They do this to make sure the thesis is good research. If it was not, then the department would look really bad in the research community. In defending your thesis, you learn to think on your feet and address critism of your research. Defending my thesis was one of the most challenging things I ever did (MS Geochemistry). I just don't think Derek has the temperament for that sort of thing. I can see it now...."Mr Smart, would you please explain your data in table 3?" Derek replies..."You are a !@#$#@ detractor! Shut the &^%$ up! Fool! You have now joined the ranks of my killfile". As far as the thesis suppression stuff goes, I have a very hard time believing this too. Myself and other grad students worked in areas where tens of millions of dollars hung in the balance. My thesis was not suppressed. In fact, several oil companies gave me research grants so they could have first crack at my thesis. They actually got it several weeks before it was generally available. At no time was suppression ever mentioned. Anyway, just some thoughts. Sorry for the long post. Allan
